Assessment, Planning, and Consultation in Education
Jamie Rackl
Ballroom C
Assessment, Planning, and Consultation is an EPIC-guided process of evaluating your school's current family engagement practices. EPIC utilizes several processes to develop an extensive assessment and in turn, a comprehensive report of findings. This information can then be used to develop an in-depth family engagement plan. Plans include both short term and long term goals that are customized to your community and school culture. This presentation is most appropriate for school staff who have financial decision making abilities.
Opening a World of Possibilities Using Mobile Technology to Create Microlearning Opportunities
Jennifer Geibel and Tara Kelly
Ballroom E
Ever spent a lot of hours cramming for a quiz and did well enough.... only to realize later that you had forgotten everything that you had learned? Such an experience is not unusual. Scientific research (and anecdotal evidence!) supports the belief (fact?) that authentic learning cannot be "crammed". Meaningful learning - that is, learning that is retained by the learner - is best presented in small units. These are the skills that humans remember, use, and perform fluently and purposefully.
Enter microlearning! Microlearning is a holistic approach which promotes skill-based learning via small amounts. Breaking information into "bite-sized" chunks helps learners maintain attention and achieve higher retention rates. These chunks are typically presented in experiences that range from three to no more than ten minutes in length - short enough to keep the learner's attention, from beginning to end.
Participants in this session will be introduced to microlearning as a mode of instruction and explore the benefits of this learning modality. The group will also participate in discussions regarding how to effectively utilize mobile devices in learning and family engagement. Various microlearning apps will be introduced and examples of microlearning activities will be examined. The group will review best practices in the development of microlearning lessons and participants will be given the opportunity to develop lessons of their own.
Anyone who teaches, informs, and engages children and families would benefit from learning more about this 21st century approach to teaching and learning. Remember when it comes to microlearning - less is more!
Social Emotional Learning for Everyone
Stephanie Colvin-Roy
Harris Room
When schools, families, and community groups collaborate to support learning, children enjoy school more and perform better academically. When those groups prioritize children's and adults social-emotional learning (SEL), positive relationships are developed and enhanced. In this workshop, we will explore the benefits of leaning and practicing SEL, which help children grow into healthy, caring capable, and responsible young adults. Participants will:
1) Define social and emotional learning (SEL) and identify skills to build SEL competence
2) Examine SEL skills for adults in the context of self-awareness and self-management
3) Identify ways to enhance children's competence in SEL skills to prepare them for success in school
